Wilkinsburg Community Development Corporation 2010 – 2011 Committee Descriptions

Design Committee – This committee is working to create a unified, vibrant business district by developing plans for physical improvements – façade improvements, beautification projects, historic preservation and planning & zoning recommendations. Current projects include providing technical assistance on façade improvements to update storefronts, partnering with Nine Mile Run Watershed Association to plant and maintain healthy street trees, design gateway signs, secure vacant buildings and support public art installations.

Economic Development – Providing resources to support our local businesses and help to bring in new ones is the responsibility of the Economic Development Committee. Its function is to retain and create jobs, increase our tax base and convert unused space into productive property. The WCDC is providing realtor support to market for-sale/for-rent properties to attract new business and is supplying resource information on incentives, grants and loans, as well as additional business development resources.

Marketing & Communication – This committee promotes our business district, as well as planning special events and community activities. Our goal is to improve upon the image of the community – how non-residents perceive our business district as well as the identity and how residents view or feel about the community. Currently, this committee is engaged in a media campaign to promote positive news stories through press releases, a monthly Wilkinsburg Sun newsletter page, and a neighborhood page on Pop City Media.

Green, Clean and Safe – Greening is relevant to a neighborhood’s image, appearance, and health issues. Cleanliness is the bridge between safety and greening. Littered vacant lots and illegal dumping areas often present venues for criminal activity. Dealing with crime and cleaning up unsavory and unsafe features in a neighborhood is a critical first step in changing the area for the better. This committee’s current projects include providing street and litter clean-up through our full-time Beautification Coordinator, installing newly manufactured litter receptacles, and facilitating monthly business district safety meetings.

Youth & Education Initiative
– The WCDC is pleased to have funding available to groups and organizations within Wilkinsburg that support the academic and civic endeavors of our youth. The WCDC youth initiative awarded $3,000 to the Wilkinsburg Community Ministry for their summer 2011 Youth Meal Partnership. See article here.
